Much of the business that fuels Hong Kong's economy is concerned with her large neighbor to the north: China,

Hong Kong traditionally has been China's window on the western world and it is still the main base for western businessmen hoping to do business with the most populous nation on earth.

There are many ways to get to China, but in most cases you'll need to start with a visa.

The easy ways is to give your passport to a travel agent or China Travel Service (CTS) or you can let them do all the work. Or you can do as the locals do, and do it yourself.

Note: Shenzhen has an airport so it is possible to fly out of there if Hong Kong's flights are booked or you do not want to return.

  • CTS hotline: 2851 1700

Visas: through CTS (many locations) or through the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (5/f, Lower Block, Chinese Resources Bldg., 26 Harbour Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong. Tel: 2827 1881.
Same day service available

Getting to China:

By land: Hong Kong's Citybus runs a service to Shenzhen, Shenzhen Airport, Canton (Guangzhou) and other points in southern China with many daily departures.

Departures are from Admiralty, Central District, Hong Kong Island and China Hong Kong City, Canton Road, Tshimshatsui, Kowloon. (Tel: 2736 3888)

By sea: There are many sailings daily from both the Macau Ferry Terminal (Hong Kong) and the China Ferry Service.

By air: Hong Kong's Dragonair and a half a dozen airlines from China depart from CLK daily. (You can also fly out of Macau's airport to China, or walk/drive across the border to Zhuhai.

Some words of caution:

  • Don't schedule your itinerary too tightly. Leave plenty of time for unexpected delays.
  • Always reconfirm your bookings as flights are usually overbooked.
  • From September through November airlines and hotels are heavily booked and it is essential to make reservations early.
