That's OK for you, the customer. But what you must be on the lookout for are the shoddy counterfeits. Inspect carefully before you buy. After you've paid it will be too late in most cases.

Shopping in the factory outlets is a good way to pick up some genuine bargains and over-runs - things like leather garments, cashmere sweater, silk shirts and blouses, raincoats and sportswear, dress shirts - at very good prices.

How do you find the factory outlets, many of which are tucked away in industrial areas? Your first stop should be the Hong Kong Tourist Association to collect a copy of Factory Outlets for Locally Made Fashion and Jewelry. They will also point you in the right direction.

Many outlets are located the Kaiser Estate in the Hung Hom area of Kowloon, which should make things easier.

Tailoring: There is not much variation in prices charged by tailors in the major shopping areas, but quality does vary. Instead of trying to find the lowest price, you should concentrate on getting the best quality possible for the money.

Here are some tips:

• Deal with a tailoring shop convenient to the hotel where you are staying, because to make a suit fit properly takes at least two, and perhaps more fittings. You don't want to spend all of your time traveling back and forth to a tailor shop on the other side of the harbor.
  
  
• Allow plenty of time for the tailor to make your order. Forget about a "24-hour suit". You probably would do better buying off the rack at home.
  
  
• The quality of thread, lining and interlining, zippers and buttons is as important as the material selected. Insist on good quality and have the tailor show you just what will be used.
  
  
• Don't leave a large deposit with a tailor. Twenty percent or less is adequate.
  
  
• Take advantage of custom-tailoring to get all those special little touches you want: colorful lining; extra pockets for eyeglasses, a passport, pocket calculator, monograms, extra flaps, piping, buttons - whatever turns you on. Most will be included at little or no extra charge.

High quality suiting materials from Britain, the U.S., Japan and Italy are available. English fabrics are still the favorite.

How much can you expect to pay?

Figure HK$1,800-3,000 for a good quality, medium-weight three-piece suit, including materials and labor.

Fancy or heavier weight materials would increase the price. An "economy class", light- to medium-weight suit, figure about HK$1,500. Tailored dress shirts cost from about HK$200 and up, but quite often can be cheaper if thrown in with the suit order.
