Have some fun: Everybody needs to relax now and then, so you owe it to yourself to enjoy some leisure time while you're here.

That usually involves finding a way to escape from the crowds of people that seem to be everywhere, and that usually involves the sea.

BEACHES: Hong Kong is blessed with some good beaches, although the nearest ones (Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay, South Bay, Stanley) become very crowded on fine summer days, there's breathing space other than during the "official" swimming season (June-Sept).

In fact, the beaches are usually more enjoyable in October and November, or even December, than during the hot months.

The beaches of Lantau island and Lamma island are less crowded. The best beaches of all, however, are in the New Territories, in Sai Kung and Tai Long Wan, which can only be reached by boat, or by car or minibus and hiking.

OUTLYING ISLANDS: There are a number of inexpensive, pleasant ferry rides of 45-60 min that originate from the Outlying Ferries Pier in Central. (They can be pleasant, that is , provided you don't travel just when Hong Kong's million young factory and office workers are heading out for their weekend hikes and barbecues.)

CLUBS: form a major part of the expatriate social scene in Hong Kong. Some, like the Hong Kong Club, have a history almost as long as the British presence in Hong Kong.

Some are solely for eating, drinking and socializing, while others are sports oriented, with swimming pools are facilities for squash, billiards, cricket, tennis, boating, etc.

If you belong to a club back home, check to see if they have reciprocal rights with any in Hong Kong.

HORSERACING: It may be the Sport of Kings, but in Hong Kong nearly everyone, royalisty or no partakes.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has two tracks, one in Happy Valley (Hong Kong Island) and the other in Shatin (New Territories).

If you don't know any members of the HKJC to get you in, and you do not feel like lining up early in the morning for a hard to come by ticket in the public gallery contact the Hong Kong Tourist Association for its "Come Horseracing Tour".
