TRANSPORTATION:

Trains/Subways: The Mass Transit Railway, known as MTR, is a fast, modern subway (or underground, or tube or metro or U-bahn if you prefer) which connects the far corners of the SAR. MTR Station in Central
It runs from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. and is air-conditioned and clean.

Fares range from HK$4-26.

The Central Station connects with the Airport Express Hong Kong Station.

The Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) serves parts of the New Territories and the border.

Fares range from HK$3-33 and the crossover station (to the MTR or vice versa) is Kowloon Tong while ferries ply routes to most of Hong Kong's inhabited islands.

Taxis: Plentiful and less expensive than other major cities.

For urban taxis (red with grey tops), it is a HK$15 flagfall and HK$1.40 per 200 meters.

New Territories taxis (green with grey top) are slightly cheaper: HK$12.50 and HK$1.20 respectively.

Buses: Service is frequent and inexpensive. Fares range from HK$1.20-45, depending on the distance (buses go into China) and quality of bus (there are air-conditioned, express buses for business executives).

There are also minibuses, 16-seater passenger vans with cream-coloured bodies and red tops, which run any route they want (there are signs in English and Chinese on the front of the bus) and must be flagged down. (HK$2-20.)

The 16-seater vans with green roofs are minibuses, just to confuse you. They have set routes and set fares and are numbered. ($1.50-18.)

Trams: There is a double-decker tram (street car) system which trundles along the north shore of Hong Kong Island (HK$2 flat fare) and the Peak Tram (which is really a funicular railway) to and from The Peak on Hong Kong Island (HK$18 one way, $28 return).

Ferries: The famed double-bowed Star Ferry still plies the route to and from Central District on Hong Kong Island and Tsimshatsui, Kowloon, as it has done for more than a century, between 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m.

Fares are from HK$1.70-2.20 depending on the class.

The Star Ferry also has Central-Hung Hom (Kowloon) and a Wanchai (Hong Kong)-Tsimshatsui routes.

Rounding out Hong Kong public transportation are the ferries to the Outer Islands which leave from the Outlying Districts Ferry Pier (west of the Star Ferry and General Post Office, Central District). Ferries

Fares range from HK$10 lower deck ordinary class to HK$24 for a air-conditioned, weekend deluxe fare. On holidays the fares are higher.

The terminal for high-speed ferries to Discovery Bay (HK$25) is next to the Star Ferry on Hong Kong-side.

Owning a car: Many western businessmen can't give up the convenience and comfort of owning a car and they consequently pay dearly for the luxury.

For a start, there is a 40-60% first registration tax on new cars.

The annual road tax ranges from HK$3,929 (US$510) for a car with an engine of less than 1,500cc to HK$11,329 (US$1,472) for any car over 4,500cc.

Gas costs HK$9.50-11 per liter which works out to around US$5 a gallon.

Insurance is higher in Hong Kong than elsewhere and parking is at a premium. (In 1997, a single parking space in n apartment block sold for just under HK$1 million [US$130,000])!

Commercial parking garages charge between HK$20-35 (US$2.50-4.50) an hour.

Add on repairs and maintenance. Still there's nothing like the thrill of sitting behind the wheel in some of the densest traffic in the world --- er, right?
